If you’ve ever seen the 2011 movie Limitless, starring Bradley Cooper, then you know the promise of so-called “smart drugs”. If not, I’ll fill you in. Cooper’s character, Eddie Morra, gets his hands on a supply of a mysterious drug called NZT-48 that allows him to access the full potential of his brain and transition from a struggling writer to a financial genius who’s able to dominate the global markets. Plausible? No, of course not. But, is there even a sliver of truth built into the movie? Actually, yes.
It’s true; there are drugs out there that can provide you with increased cognitive function. In fact, you’ve actually heard of most of them. They’re called psycho-stimulants and they include such drugs as adderall, pseudoephedrine, methamphetamine, and even cocaine. Some of the substances in this class are prescription drugs and, obviously, some are flat out illegal and dangerous. One of the common factors among all of them, though, is that they come with side effects ranging from minor to, well, sudden death. Oh, right; I forgot to mention that, in the movie, (SPOILER ALERT AHEAD!) Eddie becomes helplessly addicted to NZT-48, experiences diminishing returns with each pill, and must constantly up his dosage to the point that it nearly kills him.
NZT-48 is actually based on the real-life drug Modafinil, a prescription “wakefulness-promoting agent” meant to treat disorders such as narcolepsy. However, it has also been used off-label as a moderate cognition enhancer, with some success. Much like NZT-48, Modafinil also has its possible side effects; from the relatively minor: headaches, nausea, and dizziness to the seriously major, often involving a form of hives on the skin: angioedema (rapid swelling of the skin and mucosal tissues), toxic epidermal necrolysis (as bad as it sounds), and even Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (again, no thanks).
If you’ve ever heard the term Nootropics, you know that it is often used interchangeably with “smart drugs”. However, within the brain boosting community, there is a dividing line between the two. Generally, “smart drugs” refers to prescription medications whose primary use is the treatment of cognitive disorders (ADHD, Narcolepsy, etc.). Off-label use, however, may promote energy and focus, resulting in increased brain performance. The downside is that users of these drugs may build up a tolerance to them and they may be habit-forming. This may lead to increased stress levels, mood swings, sleep issues, and other problems, not to mention the types of possible severe adverse side effects such as those mentioned in the case of Modafinil.
[Nootropics] are used to increase cognition by protecting against decline and supporting peak brain function without any known appreciable side effects.
When it comes to giving your cognitive performance a boost, however, smart drugs are not your only option. Hence, the aforementioned Nootropics, which generally fall into a class of non-prescription compounds such as herbs, supplements, and vitamins. These Nootropics, unlike smart drugs, are not intended to treat any medical condition directly, but rather are used to increase cognition by protecting against decline and supporting peak brain function without any known appreciable side effects.
We wholly support the use of Nootropics, as we’ve defined them. These formulas may contain natural or synthetic ingredients, but at Hula Health & Nutrition, we favor those blends that contain the best natural ingredients available. Our Neuro+ formula is one such blend that we believe in. It is chock full of natural, plant-based ingredients such as Bacopa monnieri, a purple flowering perennial native to India, which was taken by ancient Hindu scholars to aid in the memorization of long hymns. Or, Huperzine A, extracted from the Huperzia serrata plant, which is being examined as a possible treatment for neurodegeneration diseases. Neuro+ contains many more, as well as lots of vitamins and nutrients that exceed the FDA’s daily minimum recommendation.
When taking a nootropic, your goal (unlike with NZT-48 in the movie) is not to experience some type of surge of mental super-ability, but to support your brain by allowing for increased and more consistent cognition in your daily life.
